Why Raleigh Drivers Are Choosing Paint Correction Over a Respray

Every time you wash your car, park under a tree, or pull through a drive-through, your paint takes damage. Swirl marks from improper washing. Water spots from Triangle hard water. Fine scratches that catch the sun at every angle. Over time, that damage dulls the finish and eats into your resale value before you even realize it.

Paint correction cuts through that damage at the surface level. A trained eye and the right machine polisher can remove 70 to 95 percent of visible defects without touching new paint. What's left is the clear coat your car came with, restored to the way it looked before years of neglect stacked up.

If you're planning to sell, lease-return, or wrap your vehicle, or if you've just invested in a ceramic coating and want it applied to a flawless surface, correction is the step that actually makes the difference. A coating or wax layered over swirled paint just locks in the damage. Correction fixes it.

The Paint Correction Process

1

Inspection and Paint Depth Measurement

Before any machine touches your paint, Luke measures paint thickness across every panel using a digital paint depth gauge. This tells us exactly how much clear coat we have to work with, what defects are actually correctable, and which stage of correction your vehicle needs. No guessing, no overselling.

20-30 minutes
2

Decontamination Wash

Correction on contaminated paint tears up the surface. We do a full foam and hand wash, followed by an iron fallout treatment and clay bar decontamination to pull out embedded brake dust, rail dust, and industrial fallout. The surface has to be completely clean before a polisher goes near it.

45-90 minutes
3

Machine Polishing

This is where the work happens. Using dual-action and rotary polishers with the right pad and compound combination for your specific defects, we work panel by panel in controlled passes under high-intensity lighting. Swirl marks, scratches, water spot etching, and oxidation are leveled out of the clear coat systematically, not rushed.

2-6 hours depending on vehicle size and correction stage
4

IPA Wipedown and Defect Check

Once polishing is complete, every panel is wiped down with an isopropyl alcohol solution to strip away any polish residue and oils that can hide remaining defects. We inspect the finish again under high-intensity lighting to confirm corrections are hit and gloss is consistent across the whole vehicle.

30-45 minutes

Protection Application

A corrected surface with no protection goes back to collecting defects immediately. Depending on what you've chosen, we apply a carnauba wax, paint sealant, or prepare the surface for a ceramic coating. If you're adding ceramic, this is the moment it bonds to a surface that's actually worth protecting.

Paint Correction FAQ

Luke's Mobile Detailing offers Single Stage, Two Stage, and Multi-Stage correction at different price points based on your vehicle size, paint condition, and the level of correction needed. We don't publish exact prices online because every car is different. The best way to get an accurate number is to request a free quote and we'll give you a straight answer after looking at your vehicle.
Most single-stage corrections on a standard sedan take 4 to 6 hours. A two-stage on a mid-size SUV typically runs 6 to 8 hours. Full multi-stage corrections on larger vehicles or heavily defected paint can take a full day or be split across two visits. We'll give you a realistic time estimate before we start, not after.
The correction itself is permanent as long as the paint isn't damaged again. The defects that were polished away don't come back on their own. What determines how long your paint stays looking corrected is what protection goes on top and how you maintain it. A quality sealant buys you 6 to 12 months. A ceramic coating applied after correction can protect the surface for several years with proper maintenance washes.
Avoid automatic car washes, especially brush-style ones — they're the number one source of new swirl marks after a correction. Hand washing with proper microfiber mitts and a two-bucket method, or touchless automatic washes at minimum, will keep the finish looking clean. If you add a ceramic coating after correction, maintenance washes every few weeks are enough to maintain the gloss and protection long-term.
Luke stands behind the work. If defects that were targeted during the correction are still visible after the job is done, we'll address it. What we can't warranty against is new damage from future washing, parking, or road use — that's what protective coatings are for. We'll walk you through exactly what was corrected and what wasn't before we leave.
For clear coat-level defects like swirl marks, light scratches, water spots, and oxidation, absolutely. A respray adds a new layer of paint over your original factory finish and introduces color matching risks, overspray edges, and significant cost. Paint correction restores your existing clear coat without adding material or affecting factory tolerances. The only time repainting makes more sense is if the paint is scratched through the clear coat to the base coat or primer — and we'll tell you honestly if that's the case during inspection.
No, and any detailer who says otherwise is not being straight with you. Paint correction works within the clear coat layer. If a scratch catches your fingernail when you run it across the surface, it has likely gone through the clear coat and into the base coat or metal. Those require touch-up paint or panel respray, not polishing. During our inspection, we'll show you exactly which marks are correctable and which are not before any work begins.
You don't need to be present the whole time, but we do need access to the vehicle and a flat surface to work on — a driveway or parking area works fine. We bring all our own equipment, including power. Just make sure the car is accessible when we arrive. Most clients drop off at home and go about their day.
